North Carolina College Student Remembered as Hero After Drowning While Saving His Sister
Neighbors saved his sister after her kayak capsized, but Jackson went under during the rescue and was later recovered by search crews.
On Saturday, a 21-year-old North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University senior drowned in Lake Norman near Hearthstone Court in Terrell while attempting to rescue his sister from her capsized kayak.
Jackson rushed to help his sister after her kayak capsized roughly 30 yards from a dock; nearby residents rescued her, but Jackson, who was not wearing a life jacket, did not resurface.
Following a multi-agency search involving Sherrills Ford Fire, Denver Fire, and the Catawba County Sheriff's Office, responders recovered Jackson's body around 1 p.m. Sunday.
University officials described Jackson as a Cheatham-White Scholar and third-generation Aggie who was a leader in the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated and was "set to join Wells Fargo."
Support services are available for students and faculty as the community mourns the Greensboro native, a James B. Dudley High School graduate, while funeral arrangements remain pending.
