CDC: Over 100 Fall Ill Due to Norovirus Outbreak on Cruise From Fort Lauderdale
The outbreak has sickened 102 passengers and 13 crew, and Princess Cruises said all areas were sanitized before the ship reaches Port Canaveral.
The Caribbean Princess is heading toward Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, after 102 passengers and 13 crew members fell ill with a contagious norovirus outbreak during the voyage.
Impacted by the outbreak, the vessel carrying 3,116 passengers and 1,131 crew members represents the fourth gastrointestinal outbreak on a ship this year, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Following the April 28 departure, Operator Princess Cruises stepped up sanitation measures and reported the outbreak to the CDC on May 7 after collecting samples from affected passengers and crew.
Upon arrival at Port Canaveral on Monday, the ship will undergo comprehensive cleaning and disinfection before departing for its next voyage, Operator Princess Cruises confirmed.
Norovirus remains a widespread public health concern, with around 21 million cases recorded in the U.S. annually, making cruise outbreaks part of a larger seasonal pattern.
