Noor Mukadam Case: SC Upholds Zahir Jaffer's Death Sentence, Dismisses Review Petition
A three-judge bench said the review raised no grounds to reopen the case, leaving convictions for murder and related offenses intact.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court rejected Zahir Jaffer's review petition, maintaining his death sentence for the July 2021 murder of Noor Mukadam in Islamabad.
Following Noor's murder at Jaffer's Islamabad residence in July 2021, a district court sentenced him to death in February 2022, with the Islamabad High Court later upholding the conviction.
Advocate Khawaja Haris filed the petition under Article 188, arguing the court gave "short shrift" to Jaffer's alleged "unsoundness of mind or mental capacity" and claiming no evidence supported rape charges.
The three-member bench led by Justice Hashim Khan Kakar dismissed the plea and rejected requests for a medical board assessment, as Justice Salahuddin Panhwar noted the defense relied on assumptions rather than documented evidence.
With judicial avenues exhausted, Jaffer remains on death row; a presidential pardon under Article 45 of the Constitution represents the final potential mechanism to modify his sentence.
