Attorney for Nolan Wells’ family says experts to review a boat distress call from day he disappeared
The report remains sealed as investigators continue reviewing evidence and the family pursues civil discovery and social media subpoenas.
- On Thursday, attorney Ben Crump announced that the family of Nolan Wells hired audio engineers to analyze a July 4 distress call. The recording, released by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, captures a request for assistance near Horn Island.
- Investigators continue examining the death of the 18-year-old, whose body was discovered off the island two days after he visited with friends. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter stated that friends are cooperating and foul play is not currently suspected.
- The distress call to private company Sea Tow noted about seven people were on board a vessel taking on water. A captain later reported that a relative of the boat owner said the group resolved the issue and required no assistance.
- Threats and doxing campaigns have targeted individuals mentioned in the audio, according to a statement from the parents of a 21-year-old friend. They described the accusations as "outright fabrications," noting their son cooperated fully with authorities.
- Ben Crump was joined Thursday by relatives of Tyler Smith and Daniel Erving, two Black 18-year-olds who died in recent months. Crump described the circumstances of their deaths as "very similar" to the final hours of Wells.
