Paris Deputy Mayor Blames the United States' Carbon Emissions for Deadly Heat Wave
Pulvar said the United States bears major responsibility as France faced record heat, 48 drownings and emergency restrictions.
- Deputy Mayor of Paris for International Relations Audrey Pulvar responded on Instagram to American criticism of the city's lack of air conditioning, arguing the United States bears "significant responsibility" for the heatwave.
- Europe faced record temperatures last week, with over 1,000 excess deaths linked to the heatwave in France alone. A study by Imperial College London found climate change increased heat deaths by about 1,500 in 12 European cities last year.
- Data from the International Energy Agency shows only around 20% of European households have air conditioning, compared with roughly 90% in the United States. Pulvar argued that cities that are "90% air-conditioned" are not unrelated to the climate crisis.
- According to Our World In Data, the United States accounts for around 13 per cent of global CO2 emissions, while China produces 32 per cent. The 27 countries of the European Union combined are responsible for a smaller share of emissions.
- The World Health Organisation reported more than 1,300 excess deaths during the European heatwave. Global carbon emissions from the energy sector rose by 1.1 per cent last year, according to reports by Ember, Kearney Institute, and KPMG.
