Fire in Basement of Kelowna Home Displaces Eight Residents, Pets

Crews quickly extinguished the basement fire, and officials said the home’s eight residents, including pets, were displaced and are being assisted.

  • On Sunday evening, The Kelowna Fire Department responded to a basement fire at the 1900-block of Bowes Street, where everyone inside the home safely evacuated.
  • Crews arrived at 5:30 p.m. to find dark grey smoke from the residence and quickly extinguished the basement fire using three engines, one rescue unit, one ladder truck, a safety unit, and a command unit.
  • With eight residents displaced, Emergency Support Services is providing care, while the RCMP, Ambulance Service, FortisBC, and the City of Kelowna assisted on scene.
  • Platoon Captain Scott Clarke confirmed there were no injuries among residents or firefighters, though smoke contaminated many valuables despite the structure sustaining only minor damage.
  • An investigation will determine the cause of the blaze, which officials do not currently consider suspicious, and KFD advises the public to ensure they have working smoke alarms.
