No immediate plans for roof installation at National Bank Open venue in Toronto
Tennis Canada said it will weigh Montreal funding and construction plans before considering a Toronto roof, even after rain delayed a semifinal to 1 a.m.
Karl Hale, tournament director of the National Bank Open, confirmed Thursday there are no immediate plans for a retractable roof at Toronto's Sobeys Stadium as Tennis Canada prioritizes modernization in Montreal.
Announced last June, the Montreal modernization project aims to renovate facilities at Jarry Park, boosting centre court capacity by about 3,000 to approximately 15,000 seats while adding practice and match courts.
Hale noted Toronto's Sobeys Stadium was built in 2004 and remains a newer venue, while the women's National Bank Open achieved an estimated record attendance of about 215,000 this year.
The 12-day format, which leads to a Thursday final rather than a traditional Sunday championship, will continue for the foreseeable future despite rain delays that impacted scheduling.
Tennis Canada is discussing potential funding with three levels of government as it prepares for the ATP Tour to shift to Toronto in 2027, while English-language rights-holder Sportsnet has reduced broadcast production.
