No evidence of racial bias in QEII fatal shooting as 2nd person charged: RCMP

RCMP say Deon Libsekal, already in custody, faces second-degree murder and accessory charges as investigators rule out hate, robbery and road rage.

  • On March 26, Alberta RCMP arrested 23-year-old Deon Elias Libsekal in connection with the fatal March 14 shooting of 22-year-old Birinder Singh on the QEII Highway near Leduc.
  • Singh was traveling south with two friends on March 14 when a passenger in a passing pickup truck fired shots, fatally striking him in the neck near Leduc.
  • During a Wednesday press conference, RCMP Major Crimes Staff Sergeant John Brown ruled out racial bias, road rage, robbery, and gang initiation, calling the shooting a "one-off event."
  • Jimmy Gassner, 18, was arrested March 21 in Saskatchewan and also faces second-degree murder charges; both suspects had "some criminal history," Brown said.
  • Investigators believe all suspects are now in custody, while Alberta Police continue reassuring the Sikh community that the attack was not a targeted act of hatred.
