NMC approves increase of 50 MBBS seats at GMC Srinagar
The increase raises Tamil Nadu’s government medical college MBBS intake to 5,150 after the board reviewed applications and compliance records.
- The National Medical Commission approved an increase of 50 MBBS seats each for the Government Medical College and Hospital in Namakkal and Tiruppur on July 10, adding 100 seats in Tamil Nadu.
- Both institutions were among 11 government medical colleges approved for the State during 2019 and 2020 and inaugurated in January 2022 under the "Establishing of New Medical Colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitals" scheme.
- Issuing the Letter of Permission on Friday, July 10, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board raised the annual intake at each college from 100 to 150 MBBS seats.
- This expansion increases the total number of MBBS seats across the State’s 36 government medical colleges from 5,050 to 5,150 for the 2026-27 academic year.
- Officials confirmed the decision followed an assessment under the Undergraduate Medical Education Standards Regulations, 2023, and Establishment of Medical Institutions, Assessment, and Rating Regulations, 2023, made under the NMC Act, 2019.
