- On Saturday, January 10, 2026 the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association announced withdrawal of services across State hospitals due to recent abductions, issuing the statement in Benin City.
- Earlier this month, Dr Abu Ibrahim Babatunde and Tahir Abu, both medical doctors, were kidnapped on January 1, 2026, at the gate of their Auchi residence, prompting protests.
- Security reports say the kidnappers issued ransom demands and killed Tahir Abu, a fresh medical doctor graduate from Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma.
- Withholding services, the union set conditions for return to work, demanding the immediate release of abducted doctors and warning security operatives they will be held responsible, Dr Eustace Oseghale said.
- Officials warned the incidents threaten healthcare delivery as Monday Okpebholo, Edo State Governor, condemned the killings and pledged to intensify efforts against kidnapping.
