Edo NMA Threatens Withdrawal of Services over Abduction of Doctors

The Edo State NMA demands the release of abducted doctors and enhanced security as services will be suspended statewide from January 10 due to safety concerns.

  • On Saturday, January 10, 2026 the Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association announced withdrawal of services across State hospitals due to recent abductions, issuing the statement in Benin City.
  • Earlier this month, Dr Abu Ibrahim Babatunde and Tahir Abu, both medical doctors, were kidnapped on January 1, 2026, at the gate of their Auchi residence, prompting protests.

  • Withholding services, the union set conditions for return to work, demanding the immediate release of abducted doctors and warning security operatives they will be held responsible, Dr Eustace Oseghale said.
  • Officials warned the incidents threaten healthcare delivery as Monday Okpebholo, Edo State Governor, condemned the killings and pledged to intensify efforts against kidnapping.
