Bombay HC Allows Nitin Gadkari to Sue Meta, X over Alleged E20 Deepfakes: Report
The suit targets AI-generated videos and posts that Gadkari says falsely linked him to the EBP and E20 programmes and harmed his reputation.
- On Monday, the Bombay High Court granted Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari permission to file a civil suit against Meta Platforms, X Corp, and Google LLC over allegedly defamatory AI-generated deepfake content linked to fuel policy disputes.
- The lawsuit follows social media posts and AI-generated videos falsely portraying Gadkari as personally responsible for the Ethanol Blended Petrol and E20 initiatives, with allegations he and his family financially profited from these programs.
- Justice Abhay Ahuja granted leave under Clause XII of the Letters Patent, allowing the suit to proceed with arguments that the content is "ex facie false, fabricated, malicious, abusive and grossly defamatory" and constitutes unauthorized use of Gadkari's personality rights.
- Gadkari clarified the suit targets false, malicious material rather than stifling public debate, emphasizing he holds no role in EBP or E20 programs, which are administered exclusively by the Petroleum Ministry.
- The litigation will also name the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Department of Telecommunications, and "John Doe" entities, reflecting growing legal scrutiny of AI-generated impersonation and intermediary liability on social media platforms.
