Nirav Shah is making fundraising calls to gauge Maine Senate race
Shah said he has preliminary donor pledges and could reuse his governor campaign apparatus if Platner exits the race.
- On Thursday, Dr. Nirav Shah, former Director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate to defeat incumbent Susan Collins after Democrat Graham Platner withdrew.
- Platner suspended his campaign Wednesday following sexual assault allegations from former romantic partner Jenny Racicot, who alleged he assaulted her in 2021; Platner continues to deny the claims.
- Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson officially launched his bid for the nomination, joining a crowded field as the Maine Democratic State Committee plans a roughly 600-person convention to select the nominee by July 27.
- Shah pledged to fight for Medicare for All, while Jackson wrote, "It's about the fact that our systems have been rigged for the ultra-wealthy oligarchs for far too long." Both candidates emphasize progressive priorities.
- The race against five-term Republican Susan Collins is projected to draw nearly $500 million in spending, more than double the $200 million spent in 2020, as Democrats race to nominate a challenger by month's end.
