Nintendo Switch update makes the eShop much more responsive

The update makes the digital store a native app, adds dark mode and PIN protection, and improves browsing speed, Nintendo said.

  • On Monday, June 15, Nintendo released update 22.5.0 for the Switch, converting the eShop into a native app rather than a web-based experience. The store is now snappier and more responsive.
  • Previously, the eShop provided a sluggish experience with slow load times and terrible scrolling, but this update makes browsing games feel much faster and more responsive. The redesigned interface now addresses years of performance complaints.
  • The storefront now supports Basic Dark themes and adds a User-Verification PIN for security when Accessing Nintendo or Using Saved Payment Methods. Users can skip forward and back through full-screen videos 10 seconds at a time using ZL and ZR buttons.
  • Kotaku's Rebekah Valentine confirmed the store is much improved, though not quite as snappy as the Switch 2, while Daniel Vuckovic of Vooks noted the interface now operates similarly to the newer console. Both reviewers validated the meaningful upgrade.
  • While it took nearly a decade for Nintendo to reach this point, the update provides a welcome enhancement for Switch owners still using the original hardware. The improvement ensures the legacy console remains competitive despite the Switch 2's release.
