NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, JUL 23 – Nine inmates arrested after a May 16 breakout pleaded not guilty to simple and aggravated escape charges and are held without bond at Louisiana State Penitentiary, authorities said.
- On Wednesday, nine recaptured inmates who escaped on May 16 are arraigned before Judge Leon Roche at the Orleans Criminal District Court.
- Surveillance footage captured the inmates cutting through a toilet and sprinting out via a maintenance tunnel after breaching a cell door.
- On June 30, authorities charged the nine with simple and aggravated escape, punishable by two to five years, while Derrick Groves remains on the run.
- All nine recaptured inmates pled not guilty and are held without bond at Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, while Prosecutors called him `the walking definition of a flight risk`.
- The next court date is Sept. 3, and the escape has prompted investigations by the FBI, state police and U.S. Marshals, with a $50,000 reward offered.
