Nigeria's economy expands by 4.4% in Q2, lifted by oil and non-oil sectors

Services and agriculture led the expansion as 27 subsectors posted real growth above 3%, the finance ministry said.

  • On Monday, the National Bureau of Statistics reported that Nigeria's economy grew by 4.43% in the second quarter of 2026, strengthening from the 4.23% recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2025.
  • Oil production rose to 1.72 million barrels per day, aiding a 7.31% expansion in the oil sector, while the non-oil sector accounted for 95.84% of real GDP and grew by 4.31%.
  • Agriculture contributed 26.15% to real GDP with 4.39% growth, improving from 2.82% in Q2 2025, while the services sector remained dominant at 56.62% of output and the industrial sector slowed to 3.96%.
  • President Bola Tinubu's administration aims for 7% annual economic growth by 2027, though the 4.43% quarterly performance remains below the pace required to reach that benchmark if sustained growth is the target.
  • Stronger GDP figures do not necessarily translate into improved living standards for Nigerians, as the expansion must ultimately result in more jobs, higher incomes, and lower production costs to impact households.
