Nigerian fishermen feared dead after Chad air strikes on Boko Haram
More than 40 fishermen are missing as Chadian fighter jets hit Boko Haram islands in the lake, union officials said.
On Friday, Chadian fighter jets launched airstrikes on Boko Haram strongholds on Lake Chad, leaving 40 Nigerian fishermen missing and feared drowned, according to Abubakar Gamandi Usman, chairman of the Lake Chad Basin Fisheries Association of Nigeria.
Chad's presidency stated it carried out "intensive air strikes" in response to "unjustified attacks" by Boko Haram last Monday and Wednesday that killed two generals and at least 24 soldiers.
Fishermen pay taxes to Boko Haram for access to fishing grounds on Shuwa island, where bombing was concentrated, said Adamu Haladu, a fisherman from Baga, noting most victims are from Doron Baga and Taraba state.
After the air force began circling overhead, panic broke out as Boko Haram fighters and fishermen attempted to flee, Usman told the BBC, adding that no bodies have been recovered from the deep waters.
In October 2024, Chadian forces were accused of killing dozens of fishermen during similar air strikes on Tilma Island, illustrating the ongoing dangers in the region shared by Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad.
