Africa: Nigeria Ranks First in Africa, 38th Globally in Responsible AI Index

Nigeria’s score of 45.93 put it ahead of Africa’s regional average as the report praised its AI governance, literacy efforts and child data safeguards.

  • Nigeria ranked 38th globally in the 2026 Global Index on Responsible AI, securing Africa's top position with an overall score of 45.93 out of 100.
  • The National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and 3 Million Technical Talent programme propelled this ranking, while the Nigeria Data Protection Act provides safeguards for children's personal data.
  • Nigeria performed strongest in Trust and Safety, scoring 63.45, while trailing in Public Service at 23.65. South Africa ranked 77th globally with 29.68, placing second in Africa.
  • Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Bosun Tijani welcomed the ranking, stating Africa must "help shape how technology is governed and deployed globally." He reaffirmed support for a $1 trillion economy vision.
  • The government will continue investing in digital infrastructure and governance frameworks to ensure sustainable growth. Norway led the 2026 ranking with 74.20, followed by Italy and Ireland , establishing global benchmarks.
