A covert operation by Nigerian security agencies arrested 16 officers linked to a coup plot aiming to assassinate top leaders and disrupt the 2023 power handover.

- Investigators link officers' grievances and alleged civilian funding to the 2025 resurgence after alleged transfers of almost N1 billion linked to Timipre Sylva, former Governor of Bayelsa State.
- Multiple senior insiders say the plot began to unravel in late September 2025 after an officer contacted then Chief of Army Staff Olufemi Oluyede, leading to 16 arrests and detentions at a Defence Intelligence Agency underground holding facility, with one escapee rearrested in Bauchi State.
- The government responded by sacking and retiring several service chiefs and ordering investigations, while on 26 January the military confirmed the plot and said suspects will face military judicial panels.
- Authorities say Colonel Mohammed Ma'aji coordinated planning and funding, investigators searched Timipre Sylva's residence, and General Adamu and Sylva remain accused or at large.
