Nigeria Records First Tele-Robotic Surgery As Surgeon Operates On Abuja Patient From Ogun State

The operation removed a cancerous kidney tumour and lasted about three hours, with the patient expected to be discharged within 24 hours, officials said.

  • On Saturday, September 19, Professor Obi Ekwenna-Davis of RoboMed Global performed Nigeria's first tele-robotic surgery, removing a cancerous kidney tumor from a patient at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja while operating remotely from Redeemer's Health Village in Mowe, Ogun State.
  • Collaboration between Redeemer's Health Village, RoboMed Global, and Nisa Premier Hospital facilitated the surgery. Adedamola Dada, CEO of RHV, stated the initiative aims to bridge geographical gaps, reduce medical tourism, and provide affordable, world-class surgical care within Nigeria.
  • Utilizing a Toumai robotic system supported by Starlink and MTN satellite connectivity, the operation lasted about three hours. Ekwenna-Davis reported the patient remains in good condition and is expected to be discharged within 24 hours.
  • Ibrahim Wada, CEO of Nisa Premier Hospital, noted the facility has served as a center for robotic surgery since November 2025. He emphasized the successful procedure proves patients can access specialist expertise across the country without traveling abroad.
  • RHV plans to establish a robotic academy with RoboMed Global to train at least 150 surgeons over the next two years to sustain the initiative. Dada urged government and private support to help scale these specialized medical capabilities.
