Nigeria Monarch's Abduction in Kwara: Police Arrest Miners

Police said drones and other logistics helped track the suspects as investigations continue into the monarch’s abduction and ransom demand.

  • On Monday, the Kwara State Police Command arrested 42 suspected illegal miners following the Saturday abduction of Oba Salman Olatunji Aweda in Olayinka community of Ifelodun Local Government Area.
  • Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo reported that 10 heavily armed men stormed the palace Saturday evening, demanding money miners had paid the monarch earlier that day before abducting him.
  • The monarch's brother, abducted alongside him, was abandoned after becoming exhausted. "Instead of killing him, they tied him to a tree and went away with the monarch," Ojo said.
  • Ifelodun Local Government Area Chairman Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf stated that security personnel and local vigilantes have intensified search operations, amid reports of a $300,000 ransom demand to free Aweda.
  • The jihadist group Mahmuda has been active in Kwara South, where security fears are rising, leading residents to form vigilante groups to protect communities from increasing attacks on rural leaders.
