Nigeria’s President Orders Rescue Operation After Mass Kidnapping at Mosque
Security agencies are under orders to rescue abducted worshippers and account for all victims after gunmen posted a video showing about 600 captives, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu ordered the military and security agencies to launch an immediate rescue operation after gunmen abducted scores of people from a mosque in north-central Niger State last Friday.
- Gunmen simultaneously raided mosques during Friday prayers in Dekara, Kpenya, Sabon-Gida, and Gidan-Zana, setting houses ablaze including the residence of District Head of Dekara, Abubakar Umar.
- An armed group posted a video showing about 600 abductees in a forest, while Borgu district officials confirmed 30 people were killed during the attack and buried on Sunday.
- Condemning the "cowardly" assault, President Tinubu vowed to defend communities, stating, "Terror will not cow Nigeria. We will defend our people, protect our communities and uphold the sanctity of human life."
- At least 2,000 residents have since fled to the neighbouring Benin Republic, heightening concerns about deteriorating security as officials remain unable to definitively identify the responsible armed group.
