The Sahel region of Africa, which has become the "global epicentre of terrorism," accounted for nearly half of all terrorism-related deaths for the third consecutive year in 2025, the Global Terrorism Report said Thursday.
Nearly half of the deaths attributed to "terrorism" took place in the Sahel in 2025, says an Australian think tank. These deaths have been almost tenfold in the region since 2019.

The Sahel remains, for the third consecutive year, the region of the world most affected by terrorism. According to the latest edition of the Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2025, published by the Australian think tank Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), nearly half of the 7,555 terrorist-related deaths recorded worldwide in 2024 were recorded in this Sahelian band that crosses West Africa.
