Nigeria: El-Rufai Back in Court After Mother's Burial
- On Tuesday, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai returned to the Federal High Court for his ongoing corruption trial, days after attending his mother's funeral in Abuja.
- The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission released El-Rufai on Friday on compassionate grounds to enable him to mourn his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, whose burial was held in Abuja on Sunday.
- Prosecutors allege El-Rufai received $817,900 in illicit deposits and inflated his severance pay by N289.8 million twice, which the ICPC claims each payment "represents 300% of your annual basic salary."
- Alongside co-defendant Joel Adoga, El-Rufai pleaded not guilty to 10 fraud charges, prompting Judge Ridwan Aikawa to order both remanded in ICPC custody pending bail application hearings.
- The former governor faces separate prosecution by the State Security Service over alleged phone-tapping claims involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, with arraignment scheduled for April 23.
