Nigeria: ASUU Strike - Govt Threatens 'No Work, No Pay'
- On Monday, October 13, 2025, the Academic Staff Union of Universities declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike starting at midnight, Professor Chris Piwuna announced at the University of Abuja.
- After a 14-day ultimatum issued on September 28, 2025 expired, ASUU said it would withdraw services over unresolved demands including the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement, withheld three-and-a-half months' salaries, and revitalisation and sustainable funding of public universities.
- Piwuna explained the union views the strike as a means to compel government action on outstanding agreements, accusing the government of insincerity despite meetings like the Sokoto meeting and appealing to students, parents and Nigerians for understanding.
- The Federal Government warned it will enforce the 'No Work, No Pay' law if the strike proceeds, urging ASUU to return to dialogue, Minister of Education Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa said.
- The government says it has presented a comprehensive offer, approved an enhanced teaching allowance, and noted some matters fall to university governing councils, while the strike risks further disruption to academic calendars in recent years.
