Biggest Chunk of Mars on Earth Sells for $5.3M at Auction

NIGER, JUL 21 – Niger has launched a probe into suspected illicit trafficking after a 24.5kg Martian meteorite sold for $5.3 million at Sotheby's, one of fewer than 400 such fragments worldwide.

At the auction of minerals and meteorites last Thursday 17, in the New York room, Sotheby’s impacted the world of these Martian stones by placing NWA 16788, of 24.67 kilograms, the largest piece (374.7 x 279.4 x 152.4 mm) coming from Mars found on Earth, for 5,296,000 dollars (4,556,000 euros).
