JK Rowling Seems to Be Obsessed with Me, Says Nicola Sturgeon
The former first minister said the author is fixated on her after fresh criticism over independence and trans rights, while also dismissing Joanna Cherry’s memoir.
On Sunday, August 9, 2026, former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon told an Edinburgh Festival Fringe audience that author J.K. Rowling is "obsessed" with her, claiming she does not "spend as much time thinking about her as she clearly does about me."
Rowling, an outspoken critic, recently labeled Sturgeon a "world-class misogynist" and "profoundly disloyal" on X, stemming from Sturgeon's past attempts to reform gender recognition laws that pitted the two against one another.
During the same event, Sturgeon dismissed a recently published book by former SNP MP Joanna Cherry as "shit," asking, "Why on earth would I spend time reading one that's shit?"
Joanna Cherry later responded, asserting that Sturgeon's behavior and politics, particularly regarding women's rights, have "discomforted her," arguing the former leader resorted to a "foul mouthed rant" rather than addressing criticisms.
Rowling's recent attacks also targeted Sturgeon's estranged husband, Peter Murrell, calling the former leader "the blindest wife ever to enjoy the fruits of a fraudster husband's theft" following his conviction for embezzling more than £400,000 from the SNP.
