NIA Arrests Ex-TMC MLA Saokat Molla in Bhangar Blast Case

The agency said the arrest brings the number of people held in the case to four.

  • On Friday night, the National Investigation Agency arrested Trinamool Congress MLA Saokat Molla, the prime suspect in the Bhangar blast case, from West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, hours after declaring him 'absconding'.
  • The Bhangar blast occurred on March 19 at Dakshin Bamunia, where a crude bomb explosion killed one person and critically injured three others while bombs were allegedly being made. NIA teams raided premises in Moukhali, Baruipur, and Sonarpur on Thursday as part of the investigation.
  • Before the arrest, officials served a summons notice on the MLA and questioned his son during the investigation. The NIA conducted extensive searches at residences linked to Molla across South 24 Parganas district.
  • Family members disputed the arrest, claiming Molla was detained from Chingrighata in Kolkata and had surrendered. His daughter told reporters they were at a hotel near Chingrighata, not near Kamalgazi.
  • With Molla's arrest, the total number of people held in the case has reached four. An NIA official told PTI, "We have arrested Saokat Molla as part of the ongoing investigation into the Bhangar bomb blast case.
