NHS to reward people who walk 30 minutes a day
The scheme will reward participants with vouchers and other incentives as NHS England seeks to get more than 100,000 people walking regularly.
Early next year, NHS England will launch a 'marathon a month' challenge asking people to walk around 30 minutes daily, covering roughly 26 miles monthly with rewards for those completing the goal.
Around 12 million adults are classified as physically inactive, a status NHS England associates with one in six deaths, prompting the agency to target more than 100,000 participants.
Former Olympic medallist Sir Brendan Foster, founder of the Great North Run, is partnering with the NHS to harness 'streak' culture; he says walking 30 minutes five times weekly could add four extra years of healthy life.
Participants like Lauren Andrew support the gamified incentives, though Sonia Pombo, head of research at Action on Salt & Sugar, warns the government must pair such initiatives with stronger prevention measures.
The NHS will release full details of the voucher scheme in coming months while covering initial setup costs and seeking philanthropic backing from major corporates to sustain the program.
