Former Nebraska cornerback Chris Payton-Jones, 30, died Saturday night in a head-on car accident in Alachua County, Florida, the only person killed when his sedan collided with a pickup truck near 11:45 p.m.
Payton-Jones played four seasons at the University of Nebraska, earning All-Big Ten honorable mention in 2016 before going undrafted in 2018, then fought his way into the NFL with five teams between 2018-21.
Beyond football, Payton-Jones built the Flashflix brand into a local media powerhouse, accumulating more than 1.3 million YouTube views while mentoring aspiring videographers and young athletes on Jacksonville high school football sidelines on Friday nights.
Tributes flooded social media Sunday as family confirmed his passing, with former Sandalwood High School coach Adam Geis saying, "The kid never missed a workout," and praising him as "always unbelievably positive."
From his 2014 Sandalwood High School senior class, Payton-Jones was the only member to reach the NFL, ultimately destined for his greatest impact through service and youth development, as former coach Pat Clark noted.
