NATO intercepted an Iranian ballistic missile targeting Turkey without activating collective defense, highlighting alliance vigilance and avoiding escalation under Article 5, NATO chief said.
- On March 5, NATO air missile defence destroyed a ballistic missile headed for Turkey, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte told Reuters in Brussels that he addressed the incident with allies.
- Article 5, which states an attack on one is an attack on all, was not discussed as Mark Rutte said the missile shoot-down does not provide immediate reason to trigger it.
- Allies showed increased vigilance yesterday, with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte citing a 360-degree defence approach and more vigilance since Saturday.
- Turkey said NATO defences destroyed the incoming missile, marking the first time a member is drawn into the Middle East conflict; Spain’s Patriot system in Turkey defends key American interests, while the Iranian Armed Forces denied firing.
- NATO officials said the alliance's support platform role is underlined by the recent missile shoot-down over Turkey, with Rutte warning Iran's missile capabilities threaten Israel and Europe while stressing the U.S. nuclear umbrella as the ultimate guarantor.
