News We Love: Bird thrives after receiving custom prosthetic beak
The custom beak was designed to match Beauregard’s size, weight and color so he could eat, fly and socialize normally.
A young green aracari bird at the Birmingham Zoo in Alabama received a custom-made prosthetic beak designed by specialists from the UAB School of Dentistry.
Beauregard, a green aracari, lost part of his upper beak after an injury when he was about 3 months old, raising concerns he would not be able to function and maintain adequate nutrition.
Maxillofacial prosthodontist Dr. Michael Kase, dental prosthetist Chris Seidenfaden, and oral surgeon Dr. Jay Ponto used dental technology to design and create the custom prosthetic beak specifically for the bird.
The team matched the size, weight, and color of the prosthetic to ensure it would not interfere with the bird's flight or social behavior, restoring his ability to eat normally.
Now nearly 11 months old, Beauregard started functioning with the prosthetic 15 minutes after the specialists left, exceeding expectations and allowing the bird to behave like a healthy young bird.
