Visiting the US Will Soon Require a $250 ‘Visa Integrity Fee’
UNITED STATES, JUL 21 – The $250 fee aims to reduce visa overstays and unauthorized work by treating it as a refundable security deposit, potentially raising visa costs by 144%, U.S. Travel Association said.
- On July 4, 2024, the U.S. government enacted the H.R.1 legislation, commonly known as the One Big Beautiful Bill, which includes a $250 visa integrity fee for all applicants seeking nonimmigrant visas to the United States.
- The fee is intended to support efforts to enhance immigration control, reduce the number of visa overstays, and finance border protection, although the government has yet to announce when it will take effect.
- The fee will be charged in addition to existing visa costs, cannot be waived or reduced, may increase annually with inflation, and could apply to Canadian permanent residents but not most Canadian citizens.
- Immigration attorney Steven A. Brown called the fee a refundable security deposit that could increase visiting costs by 144%, while US Travel Association warned it raises significant implementation challenges.
