Sojourner Truth (c. 1797–1883) was a prominent 19th-century American abolitionist, women’s rights activist, and itinerant preacher. Born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree in New York, she escaped to freedom in 1826 and made history by successfully suing to recover her illegally enslaved son.
