Woman Ran Sex Trafficking Brothels Out of Boston Apartments, Feds Say
Prosecutors say Zengzeng Liu recruited foreign nationals, controlled appointments and collected a share of proceeds from the alleged brothels.
On Thursday, a federal grand jury indicted Zengzeng Liu, also known as "Bella," of Flushing, New York, for allegedly operating a sex trafficking ring out of residential brothels in Boston's Allston and Brighton neighborhoods.
Operating as a "female boss," Liu allegedly used the WeChat messaging app to coordinate appointments and recruit women from China and Canada to travel to Boston for commercial sex acts.
Investigators recovered nearly $35,000 in cash from an Allston apartment where women from Japan and Vietnam reported they were not permitted to leave the premises during their stay.
Authorities arrested Liu in the Eastern District of New York on Wednesday; she faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of persuading individuals to travel for prostitution.
Financial records show Liu used a government nutrition assistance card to purchase groceries while prosecutors estimate the operation generated hundreds of thousands of dollars over 11 months.
