New York Times publisher slams AI companies' 'brazen theft' from news outlets

  • On Monday at the World News Media Congress in France, New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger warned that AI companies are making choices that could lead to "a great deal of unnecessary harm" to the news business and public access to reliable sources.
  • Major AI developers, including OpenAI, Meta, Anthropic, and Google, are "failing to embrace a core responsibility" to ensure public access to "trustworthy" news, according to Sulzberger, who pinned the cause on the "hijacking" of public attention.
  • While the Times sued OpenAI and Microsoft in 2023, Sulzberger noted that industry peers have been "too quiet, too passive and too fragmented" by the "abuses" of the AI wave.
  • Internally, the newsroom union made AI a focal point of contract negotiations this year, while the organization struck a content-licensing deal with Amazon and unveiled engagement principles for journalists.
  • Sulzberger warned against a future with fewer journalists performing the "difficult work of original reporting," arguing that original journalism remains a crucial wellspring of healthy society, despite acknowledging AI can "do a great deal of good.
