New York Times To Reassign Music, TV And Theater Critics As Part Of Effort To Bring “Different Perspectives” To Coverage

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES, JUL 15 – The New York Times plans to expand arts coverage with new critics after reassigning four senior reviewers to adapt to evolving cultural consumption and audience fragmentation.

  • On July 15, The New York Times reassigned its pop music, theater, television and classical music critics, marking a culture desk shake-up to bring new perspectives.
  • While restructuring coverage, Sia Michel noted the importance of bringing different perspectives to core disciplines, noting the newsroom has historically shifted critics’ roles far less often.
  • In a memo obtained by Deadline, Sia Michel listed the critics’ tenures: Pareles since 1988, Green since 2017, Lyons since 2016, Woolfe since 2022.
  • The Times will search for new critics on its former beats, with a theatre critic search already underway to fill that vacancy.
  • Looking ahead, new critic roles will be unveiled soon alongside upcoming searches, as Sia Michel wrote, and searches for successors on their beats are expected to begin in the coming weeks.
