Prosecutors to Drop Harvey Weinstein's Unresolved Rape Charge; His Other Convictions Stand
Prosecutors said the unresolved charge carried up to 4 years in prison, less than Weinstein has already served, after two hung juries.
On Thursday, New York prosecutors dropped the rape charge against Harvey Weinstein, declining a fourth trial in the #MeToo-era case involving a 2013 allegation by Jessica Mann.
Jessica Mann, who testified for five days, indicated she could no longer endure the legal process, leading Prosecutor Nicole Blumberg to hail her "bravery, strength, courage and inspiration" while announcing dismissal.
This specific rape charge, a low-level felony punishable by up to four years in prison, remained unresolved after an appeals court overturned a 2020 conviction, with subsequent retrials resulting in deadlocked juries.
Weinstein remains incarcerated, continuing to serve sentences for separate sexual felony convictions in New York and California, facing considerably longer prison terms on those established counts.
The case stems from the broader #MeToo campaign for accountability that began in 2017; while this specific New York charge is now closed, Weinstein continues facing legal consequences from his other criminal convictions.
