New York planning first large US nuclear plant in years: Hochul
UPSTATE NEW YORK, JUN 23 – The new 1 gigawatt nuclear plant will replace 25% of lost electricity from Indian Point and power about one million homes, supporting grid reliability and clean energy goals.
- Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Monday that New York will build its first new nuclear power plant in more than 15 years upstate, generating at least 1 gigawatt.
- The announcement follows concerns over growing electricity demand and an emerging power-production gap due to fossil fuel shutdowns and delayed nuclear projects nationwide.
- Site selection and development for the new plant will be overseen by the New York Power Authority in collaboration with private partners, with plans to implement advanced, safer nuclear technology already in use in Europe and several U.S. states.
- Hochul said the project would create 1,600 construction jobs and 1,200 permanent jobs, adding, "It’s clean, it’s affordable, it’s reliable," and serves innovation industries needing steady power.
- While no exact timeline exists and costs could exceed initial estimates, the project may advance New York’s clean energy goals and reduce reliance on fossil fuels amid regulatory challenges.

Burning Trash for Energy, People and Planet - LewRockwell
After years of opposing them, but facing constituents increasingly angry about rising electricity prices, New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently gave grudging support for two new Williams Companies natural gas pipelines. Assuming they clear new hurdles, the Constitution Pipeline will transport gas 100+ miles from northeastern Pennsylvania fracking fields toward Albany. The 23-mile Northeast Supply Enhancement Pipeline will connect New York to t…

Hochul’s smart atomic boost: New York can use nuclear power
Gov. Hochul finally directing the state Power Authority to build a new nuclear plant upstate, a long overdue move, came just as New York sweated through the worst heat wave in memory with air conditioners blasting and Con Ed brownouts. New York really needs the juice and we are still hurting from the 2021 closure of the Indian Point nuclear power plant, which used to generate 25% of the city’s electricity. Ever since that clean, reliable energy …
