New York officer killed in shooting was Bangladeshi immigrant whose wife was pregnant
MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NEW YORK CITY, JUL 28 – Shane Tamura, with a history of mental illness, killed four including an off-duty NYPD officer before taking his own life in a Midtown Manhattan office tower, police said.
- Monday evening, an armed suspect entered 345 Park Avenue and shot himself after the rampage, police said.
- According to Tisch, Shane Devon Tamura traveled from Las Vegas over three days, passing through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey.
- Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old NYPD officer and immigrant from Bangladesh, is survived by his wife, who is 28 weeks pregnant, and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch called him `a hero` for protecting others.
- Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said the shooter acted alone and posed no further threat, after nearby streets and offices were locked down and workers evacuated.
- Mayor Adams warned that the shooting underscores gun access issues, as there have been 254 mass shootings this year, and Islam’s sacrifice highlights the risks police officers face daily.
