New York mom gives birth to 14-pound baby girl
The newborn spent a short time in the NICU for breathing monitoring after the delivery, and the CDC says babies over 11 pounds are rare.
On June 9, parents Dorisha Rodriguez and Dominic Soto welcomed Yemaya India Soto Rodriguez, a 14-pound baby girl, at Golisano Children's Hospital in Buffalo, New York, one of the largest newborns the hospital has ever delivered.
Rodriguez anticipated a large infant after a prenatal scan estimated 13.4 pounds, but the delivery required a C-section when Yemaya arrived hand-first, surprising both parents.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only one of every 1,000 babies weighs more than 11 pounds, making Yemaya's birth weight exceptionally rare.
Following her delivery, Yemaya remained healthy but required a brief stay in the neonatal intensive care unit for staff to monitor her breathing.
The infant already wears size 3-to-6 months clothing and size 2 diapers, prompting Rodriguez to donate newborn-sized gifts to a friend with a premature baby.
