New York man accused of threatening to kill Georgia Rep. Mike Collins, lawmaker's son-in-law
Anthony Lantrell Bennett faces two felony counts after investigators say he sent a death threat tied to an inaccurate Instagram story.
On Friday, authorities arrested Anthony Lantrell Bennett of Buffalo, New York, following a multi-state investigation into death threats against Congressman Mike Collins and his son-in-law, David Allen Scheer.
The Butts County Sheriff's Office launched the investigation last week after Collins' office reported a threatening Instagram direct message; Bennett acknowledged sending it after viewing what he claimed was an inaccurate online story.
FBI surveillance teams took Bennett into custody without incident as he exited his residence Friday morning; he faces two felony counts of terroristic threats in Jackson, Georgia.
Congressman Mike Collins stated, "No American should have to worry that their home could be the next Butler, Pennsylvania or Utah Valley University," while Senator Jon Ossoff condemned all threats of violence.
Bennett is expected to face an extradition hearing in New York in the coming days, as the arrest unfolds during the 2026 U.S. Senate election where Collins challenges incumbent Senator Ossoff.
