- Two gunmen attacked a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach on Dec. 14, killing 15 people in an ISIS-inspired, antisemitic attack; the suspects were Sajid Akram, 50-year-old, and Naveed Akram, 24-year-old, and the youngest victim was Matilda, 10-year-old.
- Officials said more than 2,500 officers would patrol Sydney harbour, while around 3,000 police, some carrying long arms, were deployed during the main New Year celebrations.
- New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said, `We can't be in a situation where this horrible, criminal, terrorist event changes the way we live in our beautiful city` and urged Sydney residents not to stay away, warning extremists would see low turnout as a victory.
- Indonesia scaled back celebrations, cancelling Bali concerts and replacing fireworks with a cultural arts event featuring 65 groups, while Hong Kong tourism board staged subdued music shows instead of fireworks.
