Microsoft Testing New Cloud Rebuild Windows 11 Recovery Feature
The preview tool reinstalls Windows 11 from the cloud and removes files, apps, and settings before returning the PC to a clean state.
- Microsoft is previewing a new Windows feature called Cloud rebuild, which restores Windows to a clean state even if the system fails to boot by downloading fresh images from Windows Update.
- Unlike Reset, Cloud rebuild functions without USB media or dependency on the currently installed Windows health, downloading both the target Windows image and device drivers for full system restoration.
- To initiate the process, users navigate to Settings, select System, and click "Restart now" under Recovery options; the rebuild removes all personal files, accounts, apps, and customized settings before reinstalling.
- Microsoft is also testing Point-in-Time restore, which creates automatic snapshots for recovery, and Quick Machine Recovery, which troubleshoots boot-up issues to address various system glitch scenarios.
- Currently available in Preview Build 26300.8772 or higher, the feature's public release depends on testing and feedback, with Microsoft expecting rollout to all users before year's end.
