New well-being plan for children aims for better coordination in B.C. government

The plan coordinates ministries and aims to improve information sharing so families can get support without repeating their stories, officials said.

  • On Tuesday, Family Development Minister Jodie Wickens announced the new Child and Youth Well-Being Action Plan in Vancouver, establishing a co-ordinated, cross-government approach to support children, youth, and families throughout B.C.
  • The provincial government released the plan two years after Representative for Children and Youth Jennifer Charlesworth called for systemic change in her July 2024 report titled "Don't Look Away."
  • Charlesworth's report documented the case of an 11-year-old Indigenous boy named Colby who died in foster care, plus 14 other children who suffered life-altering injuries or death while in the child welfare system.
  • Attorney General Niki Sharma explained the plan improves coordination between justice, health, education, and social supports, preventing families from being "bounced from one ministry to another" when seeking help.
  • Reflecting on the plan's potential, Alex Turpin, a former child in care, joined officials while Charlesworth promised to monitor implementation closely to ensure results are achieved across government.
