New weather warnings for snow and ice issued for large swathes of UK
The Met Office warns of snow, ice, and strong winds with 75 flood warnings and 189 flood alerts active across large parts of the UK, urging caution for travel and safety.
- On Monday the Met Office issued yellow warnings for much of the UK on Monday and Tuesday, sparing London while alerts cover Scotland from 3pm Monday to 10am Tuesday and extend south to East Anglia.
- Forecasters say a band of rain, sleet, and hill snow will move southeastwards through Monday evening and night before clearing to the North Sea, with falling temperatures increasing black ice risk and strong northwesterly winds likely along some North Sea coasts.
- Environment Agency figures show 75 flood warnings and 189 alerts in England; Jonathan Day said more than 24,000 homes and businesses are protected, but around 330 flooded.
- Transport advice from the Met Office urges travellers to leave extra time, stick to treated roads, and beware of `injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces` overnight Monday into Tuesday.
- Looking ahead, forecasters expect Thursday into Friday will be largely dry with some clear skies, turning milder towards the end of the week while the public is urged to stay updated.
