New Travel Rules to Affect Birmingham Airport Passengers From This Week
Starting Wednesday, July 8, children aged eight and nine will be eligible to use e-gates at UK airports, lowering the minimum age from 10. The Home Office confirmed the change to speed processing for families.
Previously, children under 10 were barred from using gates, a threshold reduced from 12 years old in 2023. Children must be at least 120cm tall to be captured by biometric scanners and accompanied by an adult.
Based on 2025 arrival figures, the government expects up to 1.5 million more children to benefit from the policy. The update impacts more than 290 e-gates across 13 UK airports and European ports.
Migration Minister Mike Tapp said families will "experience a swifter and smoother journey home" this summer. AirportsUK chief executive Dee called it a "welcome development" that will reduce waiting times for many.
Beyond airports, the rules extend to Eurostar and Eurotunnel services, while 48 EU airports also permit British holidaymakers to use e-gates. These measures aim to improve passenger experience while maintaining border security.
Since the start of the holiday, new CT scanners have been used at the security controls at Vienna-Schwechat Airport. For passengers, some security requirements have changed. KURIER TV has asked what travellers have to pay attention to.
