First Glimpse of Tesla Model Y with Six Seats and Extended Wheelbase
CHINA, JUL 16 – Tesla's new Model Y L features a longer wheelbase and six seats to meet Chinese market demand, with production begun at Shanghai Gigafactory and 9,410 Model Ys sold last week in China.
- At the Shanghai Gigafactory, Tesla rolled the Model Y L into production, six seats across three rows, `Model Y L, see you in the Golden Autumn`, Tesla on Weibo.
- Chinese and Australian Tesla executives deemed the smaller three-row Model Y `not suitable`, `I’d love to see a higher-capacity Model Y`, Tesla Australia country director Thom Drew said.
- According to MIIT data, the Model Y L measures 4,976 mm in length, with a 150 mm longer wheelbase, 1,668 mm height, and dual motors producing 142 kW and 198 kW, respectively.
- Tesla shares rose 3.5% in New York trading, `a six-seat pure electric SUV worthy of respect`, Li Xiang said, and `the era of spacious EV SUVs has officially arrived`, William Li noted.
- The Model Y L is expected to launch in China this fall, with a potential North American debut soon after, as Tesla prepares for global availability.
