Electric Vehicles Account for More than One in 20 Car Miles Driven in UK – Study

LONDON, MILAN, AND BARCELONA, JUL 17 – Battery-electric vehicles reduce brake dust pollution by 83% through regenerative braking, supporting cleaner air and health benefits in major European cities, the study found.

  • At the end of 2024, zero-emission cars accounted for 5.3% of all car mileage in the UK, despite comprising only 3.8% of the national car fleet.
  • Last year, pure battery electric cars under three years old were driven an average of 10,054 miles, more than petrol and diesel cars in the same age category.
  • The RAC Foundation's director said electric cars are now seen as practical alternatives for long distances and heavy usage, rather than just short trips.
