New smart meter rule means customers 'could receive £40 automatically from next month'
- Next month, Ofgem will automatically pay £40 to UK households requesting smart meters facing delays or failed installations, with tougher rules coming into force in February.
- Last year, Ofgem began a review of guaranteed standards of performance for smart meters to introduce new rules for energy suppliers, aiming to set clear expectations and protect consumers.
- Automatic compensation applies for waits over six weeks, faults causing installation failures, missed resolution plans within five working days, or if suppliers fail to install or repair within 90 days.
- The rules are designed to protect consumers and aid rollout, with Ofgem saying more than 70% of households across the UK have smart or advanced meters and over 900,000 previously non-operating meters repaired or replaced since 2024.
- Ofgem plans another review in early 2027, `Labour Party energy consumers minister Miatta Fahnbulleh said`, and the Government is taking action, supported by survey data showing 85% of consumers are satisfied with their smart meters.
