Finland Reopens Train Service to Sweden, Putting Europe in Reach
VR will run two daily return services, restoring a cross-border link that ended in 1988 and opening connections to Helsinki and Stockholm.
On Monday, a new passenger rail service began linking Oulu in northern Finland with Haparanda in Sweden, with state railway operator VR launching two daily return services.
Passenger rail services between Kemi, Tornio, and Haparanda were discontinued in 1988, leaving the border region without a direct rail link for decades.
From Haparanda, passengers can access onward connections to Helsinki and Stockholm, while Boden and Lulea offer further travel via SJ, Sweden's largest rail operator.
Finland is now plugged into the European Union rail network, marking a historic reconnection that restores a vital transport corridor between the neighboring Nordic nations.
Tornio Mayor Jukka Kujala remarked that "people have been waiting for a rail connection ever since," as VR plans to improve timetables starting next year.
After a four-decade hiatus, a train line is re-connecting Finland and Sweden. The Finnish government says it will significantly improve connectivity and contribute to safety. It will also allow Finns to travel all the way to southern Europe by train for the first time.
Two Scandinavian neighbours revive their train traffic. For the first time in 25 years, a train crossed the border from Oulu in Finland to Haparanda in Sweden. Border traffic via rail between the two countries has a major obstacle.
